4-H Livestock Showing Project Groups

4-H offers a wide variety of projects at the county, regional, and state levels. Every 4-H member chooses a project area to focus on during the school year, but 4-H projects can go far beyond the classroom!

Youth interested in livestock have opportunities to learn about animal care and management, participate in educational contests, exhibit animals, join judging teams, and compete at regional and state events

Upcoming Swine Project Meeting

Interested in showing swine through Sevier County 4-H? Join us for our upcoming Swine Project Meeting to learn more about the project and get ready for the upcoming show season!

Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: Sevier County Extension Office

This meeting is open to youth in grades 4–12, including both current swine project participants and youth who are interested in showing swine or simply want to learn more about the 4-H Swine Project. No previous swine experience is required.

The Tennessee 4-H Livestock Program provides opportunities for youth interested in:

Beef Cattle
Dairy Cattle
Meat Goats
Sheep
Swine

Through these projects, 4-H members can learn about animal selection, nutrition, production, management, health, showmanship, and responsible animal care.

Record keeping is also an important part of a 4-H livestock project. Youth learn to set goals, track their project progress, evaluate their management practices, and develop skills that can help them succeed both inside and outside of the show ring.

Tennessee 4-H members have opportunities to exhibit livestock at regional and state shows throughout the year.

Depending on the species and event, youth may participate in classes for market animals, breeding animals, and showmanship. Many livestock events also offer educational contests such as Skillathon, sales talks, photography, posters, graphic design, and career development contests.

Sevier County 4-H participates in the Eastern Region, which offers livestock shows for several species throughout the year.

You DO NOT have to own or show livestock to participate in livestock judging!

The Sevier County 4-H Livestock Judging Team gives youth another way to become involved in the livestock program. Team members learn how to evaluate different species of livestock and develop skills in animal selection, decision-making, critical thinking, and oral reasons.

Throughout the year, 4-H members can put their knowledge to the test through livestock judging contests and other educational competitions.

Do not wait until the week of a show to contact us!

4-H livestock projects often have important requirements that must be completed weeks or months before the actual show. Depending on the species and event, these may include:

Ownership or lease requirements
Animal identification and tagging
Entry forms
Online registration
Health requirements
Quality assurance requirements
Entry fees
Species-specific deadlines

Requirements and deadlines vary by species and show and may change from year to year.

If you are interested in showing livestock through Sevier County 4-H, contact the Sevier County Extension Office as early as possible so we can help you meet all required deadlines.

Current handbooks, entry forms, schedules, rules, and other resources for Tennessee 4-H livestock exhibitions are maintained by the University of Tennessee Department of Animal Science.

Rather than using forms from a previous show year, exhibitors should always check the current information for their species before completing an entry.

Interested in Showing Livestock?

If you have a 4-H member who is interested in beef cattle, dairy cattle, goats, sheep, or swine, contact Sevier County 4-H before purchasing or selecting an animal whenever possible.

Our 4-H agents can help you understand the requirements, important deadlines, available shows, and steps needed to get started.

You don’t have to come from a farm or already own livestock to get involved. There are many ways to learn, compete, and find your place in the Tennessee 4-H Livestock Program!

Stockman Award

The Sevier County 4-H Stockman Award is made possible by the Sevier County Livestock Association and Sevier County Farm Bureau. This award is given to youth who complete the following requirements within the calendar year (January 1 – December 31):

Beef – $250 Award
- Participate in the County Livestock Show, Eastern Region Expo, and State Expo
- Participate in Skill-a-thon at Region and State Expo
- Attend one educational event (4-H Round-Up, 4-H Congress, Academic Conference, etc.) OR Compete on one judging team (livestock, horse, meats, poultry, shooting sports, etc.)
- Work at least one paper clover shift at the fall or spring paper clover sale at Tractor Supply (Effective Jan 1, 2024, for the 2024 Award)
Sheep – $250 Award
- Participate in the County Livestock Show, Eastern Region Expo, and State Expo
- Participate in Skill-a-thon at Region and State Expo
- Attend one educational event (4-H Round-Up, 4-H Congress, Academic Conference, etc.) OR Compete on one judging team (livestock, horse, meats, poultry, shooting sports, etc.)
- Work at least one paper clover shift at the fall or spring paper clover sale at Tractor Supply (Effective Jan 1, 2024, for the 2024 Award)
Swine – $250 Award
- Participate in the County Livestock Show, Eastern Region Expo, and State Expo
- Participate in Skill-a-thon at Region and State Expo
- Attend one educational event (4-H Round-Up, 4-H Congress, Academic Conference, etc.) OR Compete on one judging team (livestock, horse, meats, poultry, shooting sports, etc.)
- Work at least one paper clover shift at the fall or spring paper clover sale at Tractor Supply (Effective November 1, 2024, for the 2025 Award)
Poultry – Cost of Flock Returned
- Participate in the County Chick Chain Show
- Complete Project Pages and turn them in at the Chick Chain Show
- Attend one educational event (4-H Round-Up, 4-H Congress, Academic Conference, etc.) OR Compete on one judging team (livestock, horse, meats, poultry, shooting sports, etc.)
- Work at least one paper clover shift at the fall or spring paper clover sale at Tractor Supply (Effective Jan 1, 2024, for the 2024 Award)

Awards are presented at the end of the year at the winter Sevier County Livestock Association meeting.
