Put your horse knowledge and decision-making skills to the test with 4-H Horse Judging! Open to youth in grades 4–12, Horse Judging teaches participants how to evaluate horses and riders using the standards, rules, and regulations of different breeds, disciplines, and classes.
Participants learn to evaluate both conformation and performance. Conformation judging focuses on qualities such as balance, structural correctness, muscling, breed characteristics, and overall suitability, while performance judging looks at how well a horse or rider performs the requirements of a specific class.
Youth will also learn the rules and regulations of various horse events and classes, how to recognize faults and penalties, and what judges should look for when placing a class. Members may practice judging classes such as Western Pleasure, Western Horsemanship, Western Riding, Reining, Hunter Under Saddle, Hunt Seat Equitation, Hunter Hack, and Tennessee Walking Horse classes.
In a typical judging class, youth evaluate four horses, compare each horse to the ideal for that class, determine their placing, and take notes to support their decisions. Participants also learn how to present oral reasons, where they confidently explain and defend why they placed a class the way they did.
Horse Judging is about much more than picking your favorite horse! It helps youth develop horse knowledge, observation, critical thinking, decision-making, communication, and public speaking skills while preparing to compete as an individual and as part of a team.
No horse ownership or riding experience is required!
